Maxwell Automobile - History
The Maxwell-Briscoe Company began making automobiles in 1904 with the Maxwell Runabout . The company was formed as a partnership between Jonathan Maxwell and Benjamin Briscoe . In 1908 , Benjamin Briscoe , formed the International Motor Company with Maxwell-Briscoe and Buick , but that venture collapsed in 1909 .

The United States Motor Company was started in 1909 with Maxwell-Briscoe as the main company involved . In 1912 Benjamin Briscoe left the failing , United States Motor Company (USMC). In 1913 the USMC was sold to Walter Flanders who renamed the company the Maxwell Motor Company .

In 1916 a Maxwell Touring was driven from New Jersey to California in just over 10 days setting a record time for the trip at that time . In 1921 Walter Chrysler was hired by the company and soon took control . In 1925 Walter founded the Chrysler Corporation and Maxwell became the first part of Chrysler . The name Maxwell was phased out shortly there after .
