My Diesel - Diesel Engine Tips page 8
I have a 1 ton single rear wheel van with a 7.3 litre direct injected turbocharged diesel engine . It weighs about 5800 pounds with the equipment I carry . If I drive at 50 to 55 miles per hour (80 to 90 kmh) I can get 23 to 25 miles per imperial gallon depending on traffic and driving conditions . This would be about 19 to 20 miles per gallon in US gallons . If I drive 60 to 70 miles per hour (100 to 115 kmh) I get 21 to 23 miles per imperial gallon depending on traffic an driving conditions . This would be about 18 to 19 miles per US gallon .
If I pull my dump trailer which weighs 3,000 pounds , with my mini loader of 5,900 pounds on the trailer , I get 15 to 16 miles per imperial gallon or about 12 to 13 miles per US gallon .
A gasoline powered truck of similar size would likely only get 6 of 7 miles per imperial gallon (4 to 5 miles per US gallon) , if the gasoline engine would even pull all that weight .
While pulling all that weight the truck will easily maintain 55 miles per hour even up all but the very steepest of hills and only slows slightly on them .
