Chevrolet Motor Company was Founded by William Durant and Louis Chevrolet in 1911 after Durant was force to leave General Motors . Louis Chevrolet was a race car drive who had been hired by Durant to drive Buicks in races for promotional purposes . Durant approached Louis Chevrolet and talked him into a partnership to form the company . The first Chevrolet Used an engine that Louis Chevrolet spent some years developing in his own shop . In 1913 Durant decided on the “Bowtie” emblem that Chevrolet models still bare to this day . Louis Chevrolet sold his shares of the Chevrolet Motor Company to William Durant and left the company in 1914 . In 1915 Durant Made a deal with Sam McLaughlin to manufacture Chevrolet automobiles in Canada .

Durant was so successful with His Chevrolet Motor Company that by 1916 he had bought enough shares in General Motors to take control of GM again , and in 1917 Chevrolet Motor Company was merged into General Motors as one of its divisions .

Chevrolet And Pontiac were very similar vehicles through the late 40’s and up to 1955 . The main difference was that Chevrolet Models always used and overhead valve engine while Pontiac used flat head engine until 1955.

Since 1955 Chevrolet and Pontiac have shares the same chassis but the body appearances are different . From 1955 until the 80’s many of the engines were different too . 1957 was the real beginning of the muscle care era for Chevrolet with the debut of there first mechanical fuel injected engine .

Chevrolet is still the top selling division of General Motors and is planed as a big part of GM’s future .

Chevrolet Volt Electric automobile is a sample of GM’s future plans and should be here in 2010 hopefully .
