There are many more things to an Automotive Recall than the average person would think .
When the manufacturer of any vehicle , for sale in North America , and likely in many other parts of the world too , builds a vehicle , there government regulations that the vehicle must meet before it can be sold . Any recall that , a vehicle was involved in would be subject to those same regulations as well as government approval of the recall . Recalls must meet , regulations and be approved , to insure the safety of the vehicle is maintained . The value must also be maintained or increased , but never decreased .
There are three main reasons for automotive recalls , Safety , Vehicle Improvement and some times Sales Permotion . The main objective of automotive recalls is targeted at customers satisfaction with the vehicles they bought and the product name . In most cases recalls do exactly that . Most customers that I have talked with , feel that when a recall is done on their vehicle , at no cost to them , the manufacturer is looking after them , and the vehicle they bought .
Most recalls are issued on new vehicles that have only been on the road a short time .
In most cases the engineers have been able to evaluate the overall performance of the vehicle and all its parts and systems under operation conditions . Customer satisfaction with the vehicle they bought is also evaluated . Records of warranty claims and customer concerns are also evaluated . Any or all of these factors may be involved in the issuing of a vehicle recall . In addition government testing may be involved in some recalls , most often safety related .
Safety Recalls - are issued by the manufacturer of a vehicle , if during their consistent testing , they find that there is any concern with anything on the vehicle that could be a hazard to the safety and well being of the driver or passengers of the vehicle . These recalls would be on thing such as Steering , Brakes , Suspension , Wheels and Tires etc .
Improvement Recalls - are issued by the manufacturer if they find there is any concern involving any part or system of the vehicle that is not related to safety . These recalls are issued by the manufacturer when it is found that a part or system on the vehicle has not preformed as well as it was designed to or when there is an abnormal failure rate under operating conditions . These recalls are issued to rectify or eliminate those conditions , before they become an expense for the customer . Good customer relations is a companies best advantage to gain more sales of their product to the same customers and to others the customer talks to .
All recalls do require that the vehicle be returned to the dealer for the recall to be performed . In most cases the customer will bring the vehicle to the dealer in person . The customer will often go into the showroom to look around and pass the time while waiting for the recall to be done . Many customers will see something of interest and many new vehicle sales will result . This is the sales permotion part or the recall idea . In some cases when recalls have been issued on older vehicles , the main objective was nothing more than to get the customer into the showroom , to look around and see what is new .
On many occasions a vehicle has been labeled badly because of recalls . For the most part , recalls are a good thing , not bad .
If a manufacturer issues a recall due to a miss in design feature of a part , or system , that manufacturer is owning up to the error and rectifying that condition for the customer .
Recalls save the customer the expense that particular repair , when the vehicle passes beond its warranty period .
If you receive a recall notice for your vehicle , get it done . It could be a safety issue ? In any case it will save you money , in the long term and recalls are done at no cost to you .
As far as the sales permotion part is concerned , it never hurts to look around from time to time , to see what is new and to keep up to date . This can give you an advantage later when you are in the market to buy .
