Do - it - your self U-Joints
Before removing the drive shaft , mark the shaft and parts , with chalk, crayon or I prefer to use paint. (Touch -up paint is great for marking many things as it comes with a little brush , it dries quickly and the mark is permanent .) Mark the drive shaft and the differential yolk so you can put it back in the same place. This will help to prevent a driveline vibration after the job is completed. Also mark each section of the drive shaft the shaft , the slip yolk , and the rear flange , if used . Drive shafts are balanced . Reassembling all parts in the same place will help to keep that balance, and prevent vibration after the job is done . Do not hammer on the drive shaft , as that can damage the shaft and cause vibration . Use of a large C clamp and a socket slightly larger than the cups is one method. A punch and a socket is another.
Before installing the cups over the joint and into the drive shaft, pack some grease into the cups to hold the needle bearings in place. Install the first cup past the slightly deeper into the hole than the normal position to allow the needle bearings of the second cap to fit over the joint during installation .
If you use joints with a grease fittings and grease them every service the could last the life of the vehicle.
