- A tune up service is to keep the engine running properly .
On older vehicles , tune up services were recommended every 12,000 to 20,000 miles (20,000 to 30,000 km) .
- On newer vehicle the recommended intervals for tune-up , are commonly 60,000 to 100,000 miles (100,000 to 160,000 km)
- On a tune up service the spark plugs are replaced . Also the fuel filter , the air filter , and the crank case breather filter,(and crank case vent valve (PCV)on some vehicles) are replaced . In some cases the air intake throttle body should be cleaned at this time , to remove the dirt and residue from driving .
An engine analyses should be done to make sure that all control devices are working properly and that the vehicle is performing as it should and that the spark plug wires are conducting current properly . The spark plug wires should be replaced at this time if the are not passing current properly or if they are affecting performance ,or if they are damaged , or old , or causing engine miss ,etc . Any sensors or engine control devices that are found to be malfunctioning at this time should also be replaced .
An engine that is kept (in proper tune) running properly will perform better , start easier and will get the best fuel mileage , and will have lower emissions .
- A fuel injector flush service is often a good idea at this time , if needed.
- Tire pressures should be checked and corrected on this service as under inflated tires can affect performance and cause lower fuel mileage.
- The vehicle should be road tested to verify proper performance .
Note! A vehicle that is properly maintained gets the best fuel mileage and seldom give problems .
