Transmission service
A transmission service is normally recommended about every 50,000 miles (80,000 km) . it is very important to do the first transmission service , no later than the recommended specified interval . If you buy a used vehicle and you are not sure if it needs a transmission or if you are told you need a transmission service ,and question that ,  check the fluid for discolor and for a burned odor . These are indication that the service is needed . The idea is to service the transmission before the fluid gets burned or discolored . Regular services are the best idea .

On a transmission service the vehicle should be road tested first , to verify the proper operation of the vehicle transmission .
- The transmission fluid is removed and replaced with the ‘proper’ new transmission fluid for your vehicle .(Vehicles do not all take the same transmission fluid . The wrong fluid can do serious damage to a transmission). - The transmission filter must be replaced at this time . The transmission oil pan is removed to replace the filter . The transmission oil pan must be cleaned and the pan gasket may need replacement. On some models adjustments to bands and or linkages should be checked and corrected at this time .
Band adjustment , gear shift linkage (or cable) adjustment , and kick down linkage are done according to the vehicle requirements . The vehicle should be road tested again to verify proper operation of the transmission after the service and the transmission should be given a final check for leaks and proper fluid level .
Note ! The first transmission service is very important as all the debris of new vehicle brake-in  is removed from the transmission on the first service .
- In most cases of transmission failure, dirty fluid is the main cause . The new vehicle brake-in fluid gets dirty the soonest !
