Tire rotation service -
A tire rotation service is recommended every 12,000 to 20,000 miles (20,000 to 25,000 km) . Once a year is often enough for normal drivers . This service will increase the life of the tires , if tire pressure is also properly maintained !
- On a tire rotation service, the tires are inspected and the tire pressures are corrected to specs . Then the front wheels and tires (assemblies) are moved to the rear of the vehicle and the rear wheels and tires (assemblies) are moved to the front of the vehicle . This procedure will help to keep , tire wear even on all the tires .
It is normal for the front tires wear slightly faster than the rear tires . This is because the front wheel are forced to turn by the steering to turn the vehicle , to go around corners and curves . This causes the front tire to scuff against the road during the turns .
The front of most vehicles is heavier than the rear . Therefore the front tires carry more weight than the rear tires which causes faster wear on the front tires . Also the heavier weight on the front tires and the thrust of forward motion put more load on the front tires when the brakes are applied to slow down or stop. These factors are the reason , it is normal for the front tires to wear faster than the rear tires . On front wheel drive vehicles the power to move the vehicle is also applied to the front tires , which and one more wear factor .
- Rotating tires evens out the wear of the tires to get the longest life from all tires.
